In the third semester we learned how to make music with combining real instruments and midi instruments. We were using one of orchestral element (strings, woodwind, brass, percussion) in each project. By using real instrument though it just one element in our music, the music will sound more "live". Of course you need to program the midi with detail also.
For each music, first we got to make the basic music (guide) before the recording process start. It will define the music and the composition. Then you make the score of the instruments which will recorded live (for example strings). I'm using Sibellius for writing the score. First step you have to tidy up the midi signal. Especially the time and velocity. Then export the midi signal into midi file. Then you import the midi file to Sibellius. Sometimes the score got messed up. That's why we still have to read again the score and make correction for the wrong score.
It's very important for you to have the score as perfect as possible. Because we want the player to be able to read our score easily and understand the part clearly. It affect their confidence and the sound they will make. It's better to take longer time to perfect the score before the recording starts rather than you edit it while recording.
Sometimes the recording process is not going as smooth as we expected. We don't get the sound we expected to hear. There's where the editing skill is needed. You can edit the music or even double it up with midi instrument. In the end what's important is how our music sounds good for the audience.
